Dementia Confusion

Our staff understand the different types of dementia from mild to more severe in the following aspects of care

 Communication

 Using simple words and sentences, refrain from basking open-ended questions, responding with affection and reassuring.

 Behaviour

 Looking after a person with dementia and confusion can be challenging as their personality and behaviour can be predictable. Identify what triggers behaviour.

 

Agitation

Behaviours associated with dementia and confusion such as irritability, verbal, or physical aggression. Destructing mechanisms, learning, and recognising certain behaviours. For example, pulling at clothing could indicate a need to use the bathroom.

Paranoia

Being always suspicious, jealousy, accusatory can be part of the dementia illness.



Safety

Fire safety, home security system or monitoring system, putting away dangerous items, lock kitchen doors

Incontinence

Loss of bladder or bowel control, maintaining dignity, help and reassurance, use of continence aids and incontinence products, establish routine.

Eating / Nutrition

eating food and drinking enough can be a challenge, forgetting what they need to eat and drink, identify problems with eating i.e. dental problems, trouble with swallowing, checking risks, understand the consequences of poor nutrition including weight loss, bladder and bowel problems.

Personal care and dressing

People with Dementia and confusion have difficulty remembering good hygiene such as brushing teeth, toileting, bathing and regular changing of clothes, maintaining privacy, dignity at all times, safety use of bath and shower facilities i.e the use of non-slip floor mats to prevent falls.
